Sand Tuning

The best Sand tuning for lap steel guitar is widely agreed amongst musicians to be B11

That's right, B-ELEVEN.

This somewhat esoteric tuning has lush, rich chords. Yet strumming the open strings can make even fellow musicians cringe.

We'll explain why a six string perspective is best--esepially if you're just starting out--in a future installment of the Sand tuning lesson.

FYI: The B11 tuning is from low to high strings: C# D# F# A C# E

Hear an example of the B11 tuning in the video below, where Josh jams over the chords to Sand with a live band.

This classic chord progression embodies the dreamy, floating sound that Hawaiian music in known for, especially from the Golden Era when lap steel guitar dominated the sound of Island music.

The video was filmed at the Long Island Sounds Festival on June 7, 2009, in beautiful Glen Cove, NY.
